Judy Harvey, Office Assistant / Doula
As a calm and compassionate woman, I provide labor, birth, and postpartum support for families in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. I am responsible, dependable, and peaceful and see my vocation as mentoring and encouraging younger women. Both as a birthing mother and as a doula, I have experience in hospital and at home birth. I have attended deliveries at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital, St. Luke’s-Bethlehem and numerous home births.
Since February of 2010, I have been working with Laurice Dunning, Nurse Midwife and Owner of The Midwives & Associates, Inc. My career as a doula began when I had my first office visit with Laurice for a routine exam. After hearing about my own birth experiences (two in the hospital and one at home), Laurice asked if I would like to train to become one of her assistants at births. Her question was met with a resounding “Yes!” and the result has been richly rewarding. I am in the process of obtaining Doula Certification through Birth Arts International and expect to complete my course requirements by the end of May 2015. This coursework enhances the many hours of hands-on training I’ve received through my apprenticeship with The Midwives & Associates, Inc. and serves as continuing education in the field of labor and delivery.
Whether you are having your baby at home, in a hospital, or at a birth center, my desire is to provide you with encouragement and techniques which can shorten the length of your labor and make you more comfortable. I also offer kind directives to you and your partner if you become stuck on how to manage your labor. Breastfeeding assistance and even postpartum care in your home are available if you desire them. Besides helping women, I enjoy walking, cooking, nature, and reading. I live in Allentown with my husband, Scott, and two older children. Our oldest son is a member of the Air National Guard and recently relocated to Bethlehem. You can reach me by email at email@example.com or by phone (9am-9pm): 610-504-4524 (cell/text).
Courtney Gallo, Student Midwife
My journey to becoming a midwife started early in life, but at the time, I was unaware of the calling. I grew up with family of Chiropractors, my mom being one of them, who always took the “natural” approach, and I am very glad she did. I have taken that lifestyle to the next level, and enjoy spending my free time learning more about the physiology of the body, and truth behind the internal workings of the body’s reaction to lifestyle choices. Women’s health has become a true passion of mine, and my ultimate goal is to help other women have confidence in themselves to become educated and take control of their body.
My college experience started with Biology and Nursing. As a confused student, I switched between doctorate program applications, and none of them felt right. During this time, I became a RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) and my own yoga practice deepened, as well as a new understanding of spirituality and the body. After a lucky conversation with a passionate midwife, I knew, this is it! I joined a Midwifery College through NARM (National Association of Registered Midwives) and I will be completing the CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) program under Laurice’s guidance. I plan on continuing this program to the final degree of PhD in Midwifery. I am extremely excited to be a part of Laurice’s practice and attend most of the office visits and births over the next few years. The wealth of information and knowledge I will gain from being a part of this experience cannot be put into words.
